SMHAM Conducts Free Seminar for Motorcycling Parents
In the aim of reducing motorbike accidents among children, The Shark Motorcycle Helmet Association of Malaysia (SMHAM) has conducted a free seminar for motorcycling parents. SMHAM says it is important that every person riding with their children are informed of the safe riding practices when there’s a child in the pillion.
In Malaysia, it is common to see children riding with their parents in their motorbikes going in and around traffic. “Even those who are too young to be riding in motorcycles are already riding with their moms, dads, and older relatives. But since motorcycles are the practical mode of transportation for middle to low income families, children get transported through the pillion. It has become an unavoidable concept so the least that organizations like us can do is to educate parents about safe riding practices with kids,” explains SMHAM Executive Director Aijad Ibrahim.
During the seminar, there were actual demonstrations on how a child can safely ride, what age can a child be safely conveyed through motorcycles, plus a hands-on actual coaching on how to ride with children. Moreover, the seminar participants have also been coached on how to choose the right helmet, and the right fit and size for their children. Shark Helmets
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of giving a child a correct-fitting helmet, because a loose one – one that is not his size – will just get thrown off in the road once a motorcycle crash ensures, thus it will never have a chance to protect him during an accident,” Ibrahim explains.
The parents were encouraged to bring their children along with them so even the older children can listen in and participate. The lecturers also demonstrated how to properly wear a helmet – how snug it should fit – plus how to wear other motorcycle safety gears for children.
“Safety gears and accessories are an investment. It may be expensive but it will definitely afford the parents peace of mind, and give the children additional protection in case of road accidents,” says Ibrahim. American Motorcyclist Association
Motorbiking Blog MotorcycleCruiser.com has shared an exhaustive article detailing the author’s experience on child riding safety with his family. Like all advice pertaining to children and motorcycles, he also mentioned the utmost importance of helmet and safety gears. He also tackled lengthily riding equipment a motorcycling parent may use to ensure that his child will hold unto him for the duration of the ride. “Once a child has proper gear, you confront a bigger issue. How is the child going to ride? Putting a child in front of you is stupid, for the reasons already discussed. So he or she will sit behind you. That raises the issue of control. A child, especially a small one, can simply fall off. Even an older kid can fall asleep on a longer ride.” Check out the safety equipment he has mentioned in his post here.
The SMHAM says it is crucial that parents learn safety tips to convey their children in motorcycles.
